THE USE OF APPROPRIATE FONTS IN DESIGN: THE KEY TO EFFECTIVE VISUAL COMMUNICATION

In the world of graphic design, font selection is not merely about aesthetics, but also plays a crucial role in determining how effectively a message is conveyed. Fonts serve as a visual medium that helps readers understand information more clearly, systematically and engagingly. Choosing the right font can enhance the professionalism of a design, while using unsuitable fonts may impair comprehension and make the message difficult for readers to grasp.

Fundamentally, fonts can be categorised into several types such as serif, sans-serif, script, decorative and display. Serif fonts are often used in printed materials such as articles and books because their “feet” or strokes make long texts easier to read. Sans-serif fonts, meanwhile, are preferred in modern designs such as posters, websites and visual presentations due to their clean and minimalist form. In promotional design, decorative or display fonts should only be used for titles or highlight elements, as their dramatic style is less suitable for lengthy reading.

Good design must also emphasise typographic hierarchy. Main headings, subheadings and body text should use different font sizes and weights to guide the reader’s eye in an orderly flow. The right colour choices, along with balanced letter spacing, also contribute to clearer and more comfortable reading. Designers must ensure proper colour contrast between text and background to prevent information from appearing faint or difficult to read.

In today's increasingly competitive digital landscape, typography is no longer just a visual complement, but an identity and voice of the design itself. Designers must understand the functional value of each font type so that their work is not only visually appealing but also capable of delivering messages effectively. Overall, selecting an appropriate font is the key to producing designs that are neat, professional and impactful in communication.
