Serdang, 6 May 2025 – Universiti Putra Malaysia’s (UPM) Centre for Corporate Strategy and Relations (PSPK) took a proactive step in promoting sustainability through its Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration held on 24 April 2025 at the PSPK office grounds, UPM.
In line with its environmental commitment, the event highlighted initiatives such as food waste separation and a ban on single-use plastics. These efforts aimed to raise awareness among the campus community on the importance of waste management and sustainable living.

Guests were asked to separate waste into two main categories: food waste and food container waste. Food waste included leftovers such as rice, dishes, and traditional cakes, while food container waste comprised used cups, paper plates, and eco-friendly food wrappers.
This separation effort was intended to facilitate the disposal and composting of organic materials, while also helping to reduce waste accumulation at landfills, in line with UPM’s green campus goals.

Additionally, the use of single-use plastics was strictly prohibited during the event. Instead, guests and organisers were encouraged to opt for eco-friendly alternatives such as paper box trays, paper cups, and biodegradable cutlery.
According to Ms Shazwani Izyan Ayub, Head of the Sustainability and Green Campus Section at UPM, the initiative is expected to instil greater awareness among the campus community regarding sustainable practices. “This practice not only supports the university’s sustainability agenda but can also serve as a model to be adopted for future events,” she said.
PSPK remains committed to expanding sustainable practices across all its programmes, in support of the university’s aspiration to embed sustainability as a core aspect of campus identity.
